Yellow Fever in Brazil
05.Mar.2018

During the last six weeks, there have been several travellers identified with yellow fever, including people returning to the Netherlands, France, Romania, and Switzerland. In total, there have been 9 patients identified with 3 fatalities.

None of them received the yellow fever vaccine pre-travel. While one acquired the infection in the greater Sao Paulo area and another potentially in a botanical garden in Minas Gerais, many of the others most likely became infected on Ilha Grande, a picturesque island off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

There are reports of many non-human primate deaths from yellow fever on this island. Travellers planning to visit areas at risk for yellow fever in Brazil should receive the yellow fever vaccine at least 10 days prior to travel and should be advised to use anti-vector measures including insect repellent.
